IPTV (TV over Internet Protocol) defines the delivery of digital television signals across an IP network infrastructure. An IP-STB (Set Top Box) is used at the user end to reconstruct the digital TV signal for presentation to the TV set.
The IPTV communication system incorporates a head-end and a STB. This architecture enables the SP to introduce diverse content and converged services e.g. a user may receive a notice via the TV, when a new email is received, or highlight the availability of a product featured during a TV programme.
For residential users, IPTV is often provided in conjunction with Video on Demand (VOD) and may be bundled with Internet access and VoIP. The bundling of IPTV, VoIP and Internet access is referred to as “Triple Play”; “Quadruple Play” further includes mobile voice services.
In businesses, IPTV may be used to deliver television content over corporate LANs.
